Few facts about work integrated learning program through BITS, Pilani.

In this post I am mentioning few facts related to work integrated learning program(WILP now onwards) MS degree. In the following points I would also like to convey answers of some commonly asked question about value/acceptance of the degree in the institutes of higher education in India and abroad.
All these facts are based on my interaction with BITS official during BITS orientation class held today.

Part A - BITS WILP off campus MS degree.

  1. BITS do not make any difference between MS degree awarded off-campus or on-campus and both are considered as equivalent.
  2. It has world wide acceptance. Hence after completing the MS degree one can apply for PHD in any institute of higher education.
  3. In the MS degree awarded by the BITS, mode of education(off campus/On campus) does not appear (This point might be a concern for few aspirants ).
  4. As the program is meant for working professionals hence there day to day part of work is assumed/considered as fulfilling the practical aspect required to award the degree.
Part B - General

  1. There is no concept of supplementary exams in BITS. Hence, in case if some one has 'E' grade or RRC (Request to repeat the course) in any of the course in any semester then one has to register for that course in the next semester. It means extra course along with the regular courses of the next semester.
  2. Before the final(i.e 4th) semester one must not have any 'E' grade or RRC for any of the prior 12 courses(i.e all the courses of three semesters). In other words, one must pass all the 12 courses before commencing Dissertation work in final semester.
  3. Most important point, min. CGPA of 5.5 will be require for successful completion of the degree.
I hope all these points may prove helpful to you.

Disclaimers :

  1. Please do not read web pages of my blog as official facts or information. For this please be in touch with appropriate authorities.
  2. It is purely based on my experiences and understanding.
  3. Above all views are derived while pursuing WILP MS degree in collaborative mode. Hence, there may be chances that few of the things differ with WILP off campus mode(i.e without collaboration with the individual's working organisation).

File a RTI and find out who corrects at Pilani the mid semester and comprehensive examination answer papers of students who are enrolled in WILP without any collaboration.

All the exams sheets are corrected by BITS Faculty.

According to Vijay Verma blog the Off campus programmes of BITS Pilani have been approved by the joint committee of DEC-UGC-AICTE only upto 2007-2008. There have been serious issues with answer paper corrections of non collaborative programmes.

I believe one can see how the one's paper is corrected. Hence, its quite transparent. With respect to approval/re-approval I think it should not be a concern for BITS. As this program has been highly acclaimed by foreign universities and in industry domain.

@Anuj: For the first part of your question answer is - It depends upon Industry/organisation to industry/organisation. Some do consider it while some not at all. Just to give you more inputs, some public sector companies too have tie ups with BITS pilani for the same cource which looks credible but companies like TCS says course must be full time!

Coming to second part of your question- Regular generally means full time with in campus. In case of BITS pilani they claim to run all the courses regular and not part time. With off campus they means outside the territory where university is situated. So even the off campus student of BITS pilani gets a degree as any "regular" student studying in BITS pilani at Pilani gets.
